Rakuten to feature on Barcelona shirts from next season
Last November, Barcelona announced that it had agreed a four-year sponsorship deal with Japanese online firm Rakuten. The deal is worth £47m a year and will see Rakuten’s logo featured across the Barcelona kits from the 2017/18 season.
Barcelona were once known for being the club which avoided corporate sponsorship on their shirts. In 2006, they agreed to feature the UNICEF logo on their shirts, in an agreement which saw the club donate €1.5m per year to the United Nation’s Children Fund. The first corporate shirt sponsorship came in 2011/12 when Barca signed a five-year deal with Qatar Sports Investment worth €150m.
The new home shirt will feature red and blue stripes, with a wider than usual red central stripe, narrowing down the stripes along the sides. The away shirt will be primarily light blue whilst Nike presented Barcelona with a brown/red design for their third kit.
