After the unfriendly departure of Dimitri Payet from West Ham United, the vice-chairman of the club from London announced that any supporters who wished to return a West Ham United kit printed with Payet’s name on the back could get a replacement for £25. The Frenchman clinched the move back to Marseille after practically going on strike at West Ham, announcing that he did not want to play for them anymore. The fee that the club received for Payet’s services was £25 million.
The club emphasised that such move was not due to finances requiring that the club sells its best players but simply due to the fact that the player did not want to play for the club, resulting in the manager Slaven Bilic seeking to uphold squad unity. The club’s co-chairman stated that he was disappointed that Payet did not show the club and its supporters the same commitment and respect that they showed to him. In 2016, the club had given Payet a new lucrative 5 1/2 year contract. In the 60 matches played for West Ham, Payet scored 15 goals and had his own supporters’ chant. Upon leaving the club, Payet explained that it was always his intention to return home to France. He was allowed to leave but not before repaying the club his salary for January, in which he had refused to play.
Morning, bring back your Payet shirt to any of the club shops & you will get a new replacement for £25, full details on WHU web site today. https://t.co/i9BPrS6YG1
